Virtual, Mixed and Augmented Reality

SMACC Virtual/Mixed/Augmented laboratory is dedicated for product & production development and design reviews. The laboratory is located at Hervanta, Tampere, on the premises of VTT. The laboratory has over 25 years’ experience in utilization of virtual reality in development and analysis of both products and human-machine interaction (see figure below).

The greatest benefits of virtual reality environment can be achieved while utilizing it during the early stages of product development process. This can be emphasized even more if the end-users and employees can be also involved in the design reviews during product development. The achieved benefits are:

Metso Minerals – VR and AR for decreasing uncertainty in machine upgrade projects

Main objective in Metso company case was to make upgrade business profitable and decrease uncertainty in upgrade projects.

Several novel technologies and methods were exploited during machine upgrade design and evaluation:

  • 3D scanning of existing machine
  • Virtual environment based design
  • Updates visualization with Augmented reality in top of real machine

Used methods and novel tools decreasing uncertainty in machine upgrade projects, because project team was able to see and test possible solutions beforehand


Sandvik – New cabin concept design in VR

Main objective of this use case was develop next generation cabin concept which were able to exploit in several mining machine platforms

Cabin concept was reviewed in Virtual, Mixed & Augmented Reality Lab by exploiting human centred design method. Several end-user were testing system and gave feedback of usability and visibility of new cabin concept


ALTEC – AR supported installation of the Temporary Stowage Rack in the ATV module mock-up on the ISS

The WEKIT.One AR-player was tested and analyzed for the installation of the Temporary Stowage Rack (TSR) in the ATV Part Task Trainer.

The installation of the TSR is a real procedure that the astronauts had to perform on the ISS in the ATV modules. All the components and mock-ups are available at ALTEC facility as well as the complete procedure. This kind of procedure allows taking into account several aspects of the training methodology and also to test the different features of the WEKIT.One AR-player prototype.
